Life… and a (big) bowl of cherries

There’s a grocery store at the end of my street.  Quite convenient.  It’s a Hispanic centric market, and the produce is great.  But there is something extra special at this store…  Each year, I look forward to one event, and one event only.  CHEAP CHERRIES!

Summer is the time.  Big Saver is the Place.  Cherries drop well below the typical $5/lb (yeah, I’m talkin’ about you Whole Foods), and I stock up.  I’ve seen it as low as $0.99/lb.  This only lasts a couple weeks, so you must use them and use them quickly.  Our answer?  A canning party.  Last year, it was at our house. This year it was at Sue & Ashley’s.  We made cherries of all kinds: brandied cherries, bourbon’d cherries, balsamic cherries, and cherry jam.  And yet, there were still cherries.

When in doubt, add liquor.  Here’s Sue’s contribution to the night.

How to be Neighborly: When life gives you cherries… smash them.

Vanilla & Cherry Bourbon Smash

  • IMG_6216½ c fresh cherries, pitted
  • ¼ tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1.5 oz (one shot) bourbon
  • 1 tsp superfine sugar
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • ice cubes
  • 1/4 c club soda

In the bottom of a glass, combine the cherries, vanilla extract, bourbon, sugar and lemon juice. Muddle together until cherries are broken and juices are released.  Top with ice cubes and pour club soda over the top.  Makes 1.

This was my contribution…

Cherry Jam with Rosemary & Brandy

  • 1 lbs cherries, pitted and halved
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1 lemon, zested and juiced
  • 1/2 c brandy
  • 2 Tbsp Rosemary
  • 6 Tbsp pectin
  • Pinch salt

In a sauce pan, combine all ingredients, and bring to a boil.  Reduce the heat and allow to simmer for 30 minutes.  Place in clean jars, and cover with a sterilized canning lid.  in a large stock pot, boil in a water bath with the lid on, water 1/2 up sides of the jars, for 10 minutes.  Remove from the jars from the pot, and listen for the “pop” of the lids.  Press with your finger to ensure they have sealed.  Store up to 6 months.
